Prop research

After researching into various music videos and the music video of our chosen artist and song, we began to start thinking about what sort of props we would want to use in our video. Since the song we are using is quite dramatic, we decided that we wanted to create this dramatic effect with the props that we use, so to get inspiration we looked into other music videos to see how they used various props to create a particular effect.

POWDER PAINT
We liked the idea of using coloured/neon paints to throw at the actors in the video, especially if they're wearing quite monochrome colours such as black or white, because this will then create a contrast as the colourful paints hit the individual actors. The video that gave us the inspiration to use colourful/neon paints was 'Let Go For Tonight' by Foxes.

The setting and costumes the singer and actors are wearing are either black or white, with the setting being completely white. This allows the video to show the full effect of the coloured paint being thrown and the impact of it on the actors clothing and skin, as it shows contrast.

In this video the items being thrown looks to be mostly food which fits with the dinner party setting, but it is still bright colours which contrasts against the white and black, and this is what we wanted to achieve with the powder paint when we film our video.

We also wanted to use a black background when throwing the powder paint at the actors, similar to the Foxes video, to extenuate the bright colours against the plain background. We thought that using powder paint would be better to use as it is less messy that liquid paint, but it still has the same neon, bright coloured effect to create the drama that we want within our video.

BALLOONS/POPPING BALLOONS

After deciding that we wanted to use powder paints, we then had the idea of filling balloons with the powder paint and then filming one of us popping them to create an explosion of colour as the balloon bursts, which will hopefully allow us to see the coloured powder and dusty smoke of powder clearly when we watch back the filming of it. For this idea we were influenced by One Direction's Steal My Girl video, when one of the members uses a hammer to burst silver balloons/balls which contain various coloured powder paint.

 The impact of the hammer bursting the balloons/balls causes the powder paint to explode out of the confines of the ball, and this creates a smokey/powdery effect and you can clearly see the bright colours against the setting the singer was filming in.
Instead of using a hammer to pop the balloons when we film our video we will just use a pin to pop it, but have a close up of this so we're able to get the full effect of the powder escaping the balloon, and we will be filming this in front of a plain black background so we will be able to see the contrast of the neon powder against the dark background.

We also had the idea of adding glitter in with the powder paint inside the balloons to see if it will show up on the camera to add to the dramatic effect that we want to achieve, and to make this effect better we can always slow down the clip when we get into the editing process to see the powder exploding out of the balloon clearer.






GLITTER

When we thought of the idea of using glitter, we didn't really have any inspiration or influence from a real music video. We thought that the glitter would mix well together with the powder paint that we will throw at the actors and also to fill the balloons with when we pop them to make more of an impact when we film it, and to create the dramatic effect that we want.

GLOW STICKS

Again, with the glow stick idea we didn't really have any influence from another music video. We feel that the glow sticks will be good to carry on the neon/bright effect like the powder paint, and we were also thinking of spelling out the song title 'Louder' with the glow sticks and filming it when it is dark, so the get the right neon effect against the darkness of the setting.
