Song choice research and genre discussion

We got together as a group and started to choose a list of songs that we could use for our music video, and we found that we mainly picked pop songs. We narrowed it down to this list:
  • GRL- Ugly Heart
  • Neon Jungle- Louder
  • Christina Perri- Human
  • Ed Sheeran- Photograph
  • One Direction- One Way or Another
  • Demi Lovato- Really Don't Care
  • One Direction- Story of my Life
We then watched the music videos for each of these individual songs and decided that it would be best to use a song that was sung by a female, even though we had a few ideas for the 'Story of my Life' video. We then narrowed it down to our top three songs that we could use:

  • GRL- Ugly Heart
  • Neon Jungle- Louder
  • Christina Perri- Human

  • To choose between these songs we then listened to them individually and if we had a lot of ideas for what we could include in the video for a particular song we would use it. We found that we had the most ideas for the Neon Jungle song Louder as it is quite dramatic and we could easily put a narrative to the song.

This video is set in a simple, but large space which has low lighting, and all for girls in the group have their own individual style with no outfit changes at all. The various close ups and panning used shows the emotion in the girls' facial expression and body language, which creates a dramatic effect throughout the video. The props and equipment used throughout also enhances this dramatic effect, particularly with the wind and smoke machines that were used as it allows their hair and outfits to be blown backwards as if someone is almost shouting extremely loud at them, and this effect if intensified when the chorus begins. The girls also use their arms and hands a lot to create an emotional effect, and whatever they were feeling at that point is being amplified with the use of this body language, but also the quick cuts of the camera to distort the audiences view.

There are also speakers used in the background of the video, almost suggesting that they amplify the volume of the song which causes more drama to be added to the video. The red lighting creates shadows on the girls, almost like a silhouette which could be said was used to hide their emotion, but also that red is the colour of love or danger, so they could imply that the love they're in is almost dangerous.
